Application
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to develop web applications.
It applies to individuals who work as web developers and have well-honed technical skills to take responsibility for implementing code required to create web applications.
No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.
Elements and Performance Criteria
ELEMENT | PERFORMANCE CRITERIA |
Elements describe the essential outcomes. | Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element. |
1. Determine the hypertext transfer protocol (HTTP) and its implications when developing web applications | 1.1 Identify the hypertext transfer protocol (HTTP) required 1.2 Recognise the limitations HTTP has when developing web applications 1.3 Identify the advantages of HTTP in developing web applications |
2. Implement session management | 2.1 Create the code to handle session management 2.2 Create the code that retains the user’s interaction with the website 2.3 Review and debug the code |
3. Develop applications in a stateless environment | 3.1 Develop web applications that keep track of data between browser requests 3.2 Document the web application, with particular reference to its management of statelessness |
Evidence of Performance
Evidence of the ability to:
recognise the hypertext transfer protocol (HTTP), and its limitations
implement session management
develop web applications that track user data
document web applications.
Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.
Evidence of Knowledge
To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:
outline the principles of web analysis and design
explain programming control structures and object-oriented programming
summarise web programming concepts including:
authentication and web security
hypertext transfer protocol (HTTP)
session management
stateless programming.
Assessment Conditions
Gather evidence to demonstrate consistent performance in conditions that are safe and replicate the workplace. Noise levels, production flow, interruptions and time variances must be typical of those experienced in the website technologies field of work, and include access to:
a website development environment
a server
a database server
web browsers.
Assessors must satisfy NVR/AQTF assessor requirements.
Foundation Skills
This section describes language, literacy, numeracy and employment skills incorporated in the performance criteria that are required for competent performance.
Skill | Performance Criteria | Description |
Reading | 1.1, 2.3 | Identifies and analyses the code for syntax and accuracy |
Writing | 1.1, 1.2, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 3.1, 3.2 | Prepares documentation expressing ideas and exploring complex issues, that is constructed logically, succinctly and accurately Writes and edits computer code and technical data, to ensure syntax and accuracy |
Oral Communication | 1.1, 1.2 | Clearly explains detailed information using the language, tone and pace appropriate to the audience |
Get the work done | 1.3, 2.1-2.3, 3.1, 3.2 | Accepts responsibility for planning and sequencing complex tasks and workload, negotiating key aspects with others and taking into account capabilities, efficiencies and effectiveness Applies systematic and analytical decision-making processes for complex and non-routine situations Uses and investigates new digital technologies, and applications, to manage and manipulate data, and communicate effectively with others, in a secure and stable digital environment |
